Self-mutilation is a common problem among captive primates. Boredom, fear and stress are just some of the causes of such neurosis, so we take every possible measure to help alleviate these "bad habits". Usually self-mutilation begins with plucking hair to cause bald spots (as seen right, above). This mutilation can progress further into sore-causing picking (right, below).
At Jungle Friends, we first attempt to curb self-destructive behaviors with habitat modifications such as more habitats/area, more enrichments, or socialization with other monkeys. We have had great success in helping to curb self-destructive behaviors with these methods and herbal remedies. If changes in habitat or herbs are not sufficient, we enlist the aid of our veterinarians.
