Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

Again, I apologize for the lack of communication; please know that you are always welcome to contact me directly for information regarding the monks or anything that is going on here at the sanctuary. We have just been so busy working to prepare for the NIH monkeys that we have hardly had time to breath, not to mention the on-going computer problems.

The Compassion for Animals Symposium went just great. Several of the folks on our Jungle News list attended and were able to visit Jungle Friends. One group even arrived here at 6:30 am to help serve the monkeys breakfast and see first hand what we are all about here at JF. We were able see old friends and meet new ones. We hope that more of our Jungle Friends family will be able to attend next year, we will be sure to post it months in advance again on the website and via the Jungle News posts.

A very special thanks again goes out to Animal Activists of Alachua for working non-stop to get the first habitat in our Expansion Project monkey-ready! The "Ahimsa Habitat" that is 20’ wide x 40’ long x 12’ high, is complete and now has Gizzy’s group (6 monkeys) enjoying the new space!

The Expansion Project will include six more of these large habitats. Christine Orman, our grant writer, is working on the grant proposal now; we welcome participation from our Jungle Friends family in our Sponsor-A-Habitat program. If you, your workplace, your community groups, foundations or anyone else is interested in this special project, please let me know and I will get you all of the information you will need to become involved. Each new habitat in the Expansion Project completed costs us $6000. The habitat will be named after its sponsor.

The Expansion Project also includes the NIH habitat. We have been working in the pouring rain for the past two days, but almost all of the panels are up now, by the end of the week we should be ready to put in the perches, platforms, swings and other fun things for the monks to play on. We are working desperately to meet our goal of having the NIH monkeys here by March 15, less than two weeks away, phew!

The NIH Monkeys, Aslan, Iko, Isuzu and Gizmo, seem to have two female monkeys in their group that we were not aware of. The lab asked us if we could take them with the rest of the group, as they have been together for years and, well, how could I say "no"?!?! You are right, I could not, sooooo, we will now be expecting Magic and Claire for a new total of six monkeys by mid month (for a grand total of 38). The grants we received did not include care for the monkeys after they arrive, so they will all need sponsors, if you have ever considered joining our Sponsor-A-Monkey program, now is the time! Magic and Claire will need special sponsors, as they may be pregnant, yikes! If the girls do give birth, we will be asking for sponsors and names for the newborns. The males, of course, will receive vasectomies prior to their arrival to JF; however, the monkeys were allowed to breed in the research they were doing. The manager at the lab tells me that Magic and Claire are good mothers and that the other males have shown no aggression toward the infants in the past, so we are very glad bout that.

Good and bad news on the Mobile Home Project...It is here!! And not a moment too soon, as Jackie, one of the on-site interns that will be residing in it after she graduates in May, is here now to work during her Spring Break. Unfortunately, she is not able to stay in it, as it is not quite ready for inspection. We are lacking the rest of the funds to put in the above ground septic ($1400 more after the soil test came back), hook up the power and water. We hope to raise the $5300 by the time Jackie returns, that is just two months away, however, if we do not reach that goal, she will double up in the Volunteer Center with the others until we can make it ready, we do however, need to get it accomplished before the 6 month time period lapses, as our permit will no longer be valid. PLEASE, if there is anyway you can help us with this project that would truly be appreciated!

Monkey Business: Gizmo seems to be fully recovered from his bout with Cancer, Rita is growing stronger everyday, Buddie is still doing well off insulin, however Connie has not been so fortunate, as we have had to double her insulin doses working toward getting her glucose back within normal limits. Bonnie has an abscessed upper molar and Cappy has a cracked tooth, so we are looking for Medical-Monkey-Sponsors for the trips to the vet school next week.

We are happy to announce that Lee and CJ will be joining Jungle Friend’s efforts to provide homes for monkeys in need, let’s hear it for Lee and CJ!! Lee, a vet technician, just completed our 1000-hour intern program and CJ, her partner, jumped right in to put her computer skills to work to help out with our complex needs. Their sanctuary, Koreymonde, will be specializing in white-faced capuchin monkeys. Lee and CJ will help with the ever-increasing demand for sanctuary care for these ex-pets.

We are very excited and moving forward on our "Born to be Wild" monkey island project, we will keep you posted as we progress.

Thank you in advance for your concern and commitment to these sentient beings! And feel free to pass this post onto anyone that may be interested.

Lots of monkey love,
Kari and the monks

October 24, 2001

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

I apologize for not getting back with everyone sooner to let you know how the new babies are doing and for a Gizmo update, but it has been pretty hectic around here.

Monkey Business:

Gizmo:
Our veterinarian team was out last week to see Gizzy. I asked Dr. Collins if he still thought Gizzy was dying and he said, "Not likely." and I asked Dr.Reyes the same question and she believes that his cancer is in remission! I attribute his newfound health to all of you and PRAYER from around the world! Dr. Reyes will be out next Friday to do another CBC and just as soon as we have the results, I will get them to all of you. We have high hopes that his packed cell volume (PCV) will be approaching normal! Gizzy seems almost back to his old self - he and Tyler have earned the name of our "rambunctious boys" and when they are furiously at play baby Rita runs to Connie and little Lou runs to Buddie. The new babies, Lovely Rita and Little Lou, have adapted better than we ever expected!

Rita:
Dr. Collins looked at Rita’s ex-rays and even though there are some small fractures due to the bone disease, there is no sign of curvature and he believes that with a good diet and plenty of exercise she will be just fine. She is still very thin from malnourishment, but we plan to fatten her up! Connie has taken Rita under her wing and she sleeps between Gizzy and Connie every night, plays with everyone by day and spends much of her time with Connie for her endless grooming sessions. I have never seen a monkey that demanded so much grooming, fortunately for Rita, Connie is very happy to give it. Connie just dotes on her. A very special thanks to our own volunteer and constant contributor Maria for Gold sponsoring Little Rita!

Louis:
When Louis went in for his vasectomy, they found a hernia that they had to remove. It took Louie several days to recover from the surgery, but he is fully recovered and having a grand time with the others. Lou follows Buddie around constantly, watching her every move and has taken quite a liking to Buddie. Lou really likes Buddie, if you know what I mean. And Buddie being the young woman that she is just loves the special attention. Buddie finally has a true friend of her own. Louis is in need of a sponsor. To sponsor Louis, click on any of our SAM sponsorships on the right side of any of our pages.

You would think that Rita and Lou have both been here all their lives! This new group is truly a delight to watch! They will all make you laugh out loud with their constant antics and can bring a tear of joy to your eye with the gentle care that they give to each other.

Travis:
Our newest addition Travis, a 17-year-old spider monkey, will be arriving this Friday, October 26th. We have prepared a great habitat for him right next door to Goldie and Clydette, our other two spiders. We are hoping that they will become great friends! We will keep you posted on their socialization. And an extraordinary thank you goes out to Lovette, Goldie and Clydette’s human "mom" for also Gold sponsoring Travis!

Lisa:
Our newest human primate arrival (and on-site caregiver) Lisa has finally arrived! And not a moment too soon. With all of the new monkeys to settle in and Holiday events coming up we don’t know what we would have done without her! She is truly a Godsend. Not only do we human primates appreciate her, but also all of the monkeys just adore her. She is a wonderful addition to our Jungle Friends family!

We need your donations! Receive these special gifts for your contributions:

We now have our Holiday Cards up on the website, due to popular demand, please visit our Jungle Friends Store to view the beautiful monkey cards.

Most of you know that the monkeys have been painting again. These special works of art are in honor of those who lost their lives in the "Attack on America", it is called the "America Series" To view these magnificent works of art, visit America Series page.

    September 29, 2001

    Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

I hope everyone is recovering from the sad and shocking events that took place on September 11th, my heart aches for those whose lives were lost and my heart rejoices for the many heroes we have witnessed in this crisis. America stands for freedom and justice for ALL. Let us pray for guidance and compassion in these troubled times and may peace prevail.

    Health Issues:

Gizmo is doing just great! He has not had an attack in five weeks. He is running and playing with all of his monkey friends. He spends most of the time in the company of Tyler, Connie and Buddie again, he rarely needs to be separated, he has been very strong and is eating like we have never seen before. The only thing I can really attribute his well being to is all of your prayers. Keep it up!

Buddie is successfully managing her diabetes with diet and continues to be off insulin.

Jimmy Sr. continues to grow hair! He doesn't even look like the same monkey that arrived here at Jungle Friends a few months ago. A special thanks to Marlene in South Africa for the herbs that helped his condition.

    Coming soon to Jungle Friends:

Little Herbie has turned out to be Little Rita and she is just 18 months old! The California vets originally thought her to be very old, as the x-rays showed bone disease, however, it appears that her diet and housing caused early deterioration in her bones. Rita was smuggled across the Mexican border and kept in a cage in a garage until the day she escaped. She was on the run for about 5 days. Thanks to Santa Clara Humane Society she is in good hands until we can get her to her new home here at Jungle Friends. A very special thanks to Janet at SCHS for taking such good care of Rita during her extended stay in California. Janet has purchased toys and special foods to make her stay comfortable and SCHS has also paid for all of her medical bills, test, vaccinations and her transportation to JF. Since the attack of 9-11 we have been unable to secure passage for Rita, so Janet may be bringing Rita to Jungle Friends herself, now that is dedication! We have planned for her arrival next week. Little Rita is in need of a sponsorship, if anyone is interested, please visit out donation link on the right menu of our site to make an immediate donation. We will have ongoing sponsorship links up shortly. I will also email you her picture, Rita is just adorable!

Louis was originally thought to be a weeper capuchin and as it turns out, he is a tufted or black-capped capuchin. This is the same species as Little Rita and he is just 17 months old, only a month younger than Rita. We are preparing the "Nursery" for our two young arrivals who will be housed together. Later they will be introduced to Connie (she loves babies), Buddie (4 years old), Gizmo (3 years old) and Tyler (6 years old). Louis' human mom, Lisa, is bringing him to Jungle Friends next week, as she feels that his life would be enriched by having other monkey friends to play with. Lisa says, "Lou is VERY gentle and kind, sweet and lovable. He doesn't have a nasty bone in his body. He lived a very relaxed life with me, and was never abused or neglected. He will socialize immediately with the people and monkeys--I am certain of it. He is very friendly and always ready to make new friends." Louis will also need a sponsor.

Travis is a black male spider monkey whose age is guessed at 15 - 20 years old. His human mother, Jan, gave him a home when he was an adult and has had him for eleven years. She was told that Travis could never be socialized with another monkey since he was imprinted by humans. It wasn't until our story of Jimmy, the Pet Shop monkey, came out that Jan found that this was just not so! Jan lives near Albany, NY where Jimmy was imprisoned for decades and she had actually visited him and was appalled by his predicament. She cried tears of joy when I told her how well Jimmy was doing and how appreciative he is of Chi Chi's attentions (she grooms him constantly). Jimmy's story saved Travis from a life of species isolation! Travis is due to arrive in mid October and Jan will stay here with him for a week or two to settle him in. Travis will need a sponsor, as well.

The research capuchins have gone back into research. However, there is another group that were in the same "tool use" study at another facility. We hope to have the release papers signed by the first of October for their retirement. We are still short $3000 for the indoor / outdoor habitats we have planned. If you are in a position to help with this project, that would sure be great. Any amount will be doubled during the matching funds grant which is still in effect.

    Humans at Jungle Friends:

Nicole, our new on-site head keeper, has settled in well to life here at Jungle Friends. Thank you again to the Cameron tithings for making it possible for a salary for Nicole.

Lisa was trained by Nicole while I was out of town for the on-site caregiver position she was applying for and I am happy to report that Lisa will be joining the Jungle Friends family and returning to us within the month. Let's hear it for Lisa! We have not yet secured a salary grant for Lisa, however, if anyone is wondering, "How can I help?" this is an area that has always been a problem. If anyone would like to sponsor Lisa monthly, that would be very much appreciated! Lisa says her needs are simple and few and could get along on a stipend of $50 a week. Let us know if you can help. A donation link will be available in the next few days.

Lee, a veterinary technician, will be coming to Jungle Friends the first of November for our 6 month intern program. Lee has a dream to start a primate sanctuary of her own and hopes to learn all that she needs to know during the internship. Jungle Friends always encourages others to help with the growing epidemic of ex pet monkeys all over the world. Lee's interest in this began some years ago when a tiny white faced capuchin, Korey, was taken to the clinic where she worked. The owners no longer wanted her and she was near death. Korey could not walk on her own for the first year Lee cared for her. Lee nursed her back to health, and has a desire to help other monkeys that find themselves in similar situations. Hats off to Lee! Korey will be joining Lee during the internship.

Mike, a Jungle Friends Member, has recently Gold Sponsored our own little Joni, hurray for Mike! Joni, with the help of her mother, painted Mike a wonderful painting called "America the Beautiful" which inspired a series of paintings we call "The America Series" in honor of those lost in the Attack on America. The donation is $30 for a print and you can view all of the paintings by selecting our America Series link here or on the sidebar. We have prints available now and a link to order originals for $50 each will be available shortly

Susan, one of our valuable volunteers, also Gold Sponsored Mickey who painted a beautiful work of art for her called "Liberty and Justice for All" which is part of the "America Series" and prints are available. Mickey will be heading to the vet on Oct. 10th for his vasectomy so that he can be socialized into a group, he is most anxious to be with other monkeys. He just talks and talks to them all day, we will keep you posted on his progress.

    New Socializations:

We are most happy to announce that we have successfully socialized a group of 6 white-faced capuchins. We now have (in order of leadership) Jimmy, Lilly, Tabitha, Dodger, Corky and Kelli all together in large habitats and they are having a blast!

Our recent socializations are also doing just great! Cappy and Gizmo Sr. groom and play all day and Chi Chi and Jimmy Sr. wade in their pool and Chi Chi grooms Jimmy for most of her waking hours. In the future we plan to socialize these two pairs into larger groups. Please order your "Monkey Cards" today!

We now have about 40 images for our monkey cards, including a monkey collage with many of our jungle friends. Monkey Cards are available to order, just click here. All of the monks are on cards now, except Mickey who still refuses to pose. The cards are only a $30 donation (shipping & handling included) for 20 cards. They make great note cards, thank you cards, and birthday cards and are going to be great for Holiday Cards! Please show that you care by ordering a packet of Monkey Cards today. They also make great gifts!

Order artwork from the "America Series" today!

There are 10 prints and 8 originals. They are in honor of those that lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th. You can also go to our "Monkey Art" to order other works of art.

Send Jungle Friend cards over the internet:

Care 2 has added several more of our monkeys to our cards listed. Send a card via the internet with a picture of one of our Jungle Friends monkey on it. Click here to go now!

Please help us, help them: Put a check in the mail today or make a one time donation from the website by selecting our "Make a donation" button on the right side of any page on Jungle Friends. Monthly contribution links will be available in the next few days.

I want to take this opportunity once again to thank all of you for the funds, toys and cards you have sent to us. YOU make Jungle Friends possible! The monkeys and I appreciate all that you do!
