Jungle News: March 15, 2003

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

Murphy Brown, a lovely tufted capuchin in Los Angeles, was in renal failure last week due to complications from her diabetes and being attacked by 'killer bees'. We are happy to report that Murphy is getting better. Your prayers must be working...Murphy's lab report came in yesterday and her kidneys are normal!! Shelly (her human mom) started her on insulin therapy and her blood glucose was down from 600 to 201.

We celebrate this news; however, Murphy still suffers from anemia. She all but stopped eating after the attack and has lost more weight--she is down to only 5 pounds from nearly 9 at the time of the attack. Murphy goes to the vet every few days for tests, vitamin injections, fluids, etc. Shelly is with her 24/7 and trying to get her interested in a variety of good, nutritional foods. We applaud Shelly for her perseverance in getting Murphy on the road to recovery.

We are desperate to get Murphy safely to Jungle Friends as soon as possible; however, with her condition, we do not want her to fly cargo and a long car ride would not be in her best interest. A jet would be nice, but if we cannot find that, a small plane or motor home would be really great!! If any of you have, or know of anyone who has, a plane or motor home to help with Murphy's trip cross country, we would sure appreciate it!

National Geographic is interested in Murphy's story and would like to follow her journey from living in a human home to life in a sanctuary with other monkeys of her own species.

Please keep up your prayers for Murphy and ET's continued health and Ebi's safe journey to Jungle Friends. Lee and CJ will be bringing Ebi next week.

Our 'medical emergency fund' has been depleted so any donations toward this fund would be greatly appreciated. And we are still lacking money to build Murphy and Ebi's habitats here at Jungle Friends. Please take the time to write a check today for the 'habitat building fund' so that we can provide a spacious home for these two precious monkeys.

Lots of monkey love,
Kari and the monks
