IRIS

Iris is a female tufted capuchin who arrived at Jungle Friends on July 19, 2002. She had been kept as an outdoor family pet until - due to divorce, kids off to college, and her human mom's traveling job - there was no family available to spend time with her. Left to her own devices, Iris became a great escape artist. At one point, Iris escaped her cage and was later found living in a Florida orange grove. It was clear that Iris needed a new home with more room, companions of her own kind, and experienced monkey-keepers.

When Iris arrived at Jungle Friends she seemed shy but curious about her new surroundings. She has integrated well into her group, which now includes Connie, Buddie, Tyler, and Murphy Brown. She also visits with Gizmo, Louie, and Rita when she craves male company. Iris looks a lot like Connie, our maternal, diabetic tufted capuchin - so much so that we had a hard time telling them apart at a glance. When another similar tufted capuchin (Murphy Brown) arrived, things got even more confusing, until we learned that, if we chant "I-ris, I-ris, I-ris", she identifies herself by bobbing back and forth in time to the chant.

Iris is all girl and she loves anything with lace, from pillowcases to doll dresses. As to her escape artist talent, Iris keeps the keepers on their toes. She is good at untwisting wire, as we learned when she started to "unravel" a hole in one of the older chain link enclosures. Now we know she will inspect her habitat from top to bottom looking for the slightest defects - so we are very careful where we place Iris!
