KATIE SCARLETT

Katie Scarlett is a unique monkey at Jungle Friends: she is blind. Katie arrived at Jungle Friends June 1, 2003, shortly after her two sisters, Sarah and Anna Claire. Katie's "human mom" originally planned to keep her, fearing that because of her blindness, she would have trouble adapting to the sanctuary environment.

But soon Katie Scarlett was pining away for her sisters, and so she, too, came to live at JF. Within a day, Katie Scarlett adapted to the layout of her new habitat. To help her find her way, ropes were placed at key points in the habitat, leading to the water fountain and exits to the runways. Soon Katie knew exactly where the openings are, and now seldom uses the ropes for guidance.

Katie Scarlett likes to rough-house with big sister Anna Claire. They both make play faces at each other and pull and push each other around. Katie Scarlett's favorite game is to pull Anna Claire's little tufts on top of her head as hard as she can. It looks painful, but Anna Claire endures it. Katie's other favorite game is to jump from a branch into one of the hammocks. She can do this with her sisters or all alone, and never seems to tire of the game. She also enjoys spending a part of the hot summer days lounging in the air-conditioned indoors.
