Axl is a common squirrel monkey who arrived at Jungle Friends on September 19, 2009. He came to us from a sanctuary in Texas, where he had lived since 2005. We don’t know a lot about Axl’s history prior to that, except that he came from an individual in New York, and both his upper and lower canine teeth had been removed.
At the Texas sanctuary, Axl lived with another squirrel monkey. After the death of his monkey companion, his caregivers in Texas arranged to send Axl to Jungle Friends where he would surely find a new friend among the squirrel monkeys here.
Axl was so grouchy when he first arrived that we nicknamed him “Oscar”. At feeding times he would yell and jump up and down, letting us know that he had no intention of being pleased. But before long, the magic of Jungle Friends won him over. He has now settled in happily, accepting his new caregivers and enjoying his large habitat, and is ready for “close encounters” with his monkey neighbors.
