Einstein, whose age is unknown, is a male cotton-top tamarin who arrived at Jungle Friends on March 2, 2006 with his companion, Tara, a female cotton-top tamarin. Cotton-top tamarins are endangered due to forest removal, collectors, the exotic pet trade and biomedical research. Einstein and Tara were used to breed monkeys for the exotic pet trade. The ‘owner’ died and Jungle Friends was contacted to give them a permanent home. They were referred to as #74 and #75 because they had no names. Einstein was named due to the resemblance and Tara was named in memory of Tara Allen, a dear friend and major contributor to the sanctuary.

Einstein and Tara were kept in small dirty cages in a dark dingy room where they were bred and their babies stolen from them to be sold. When we released Einstein and Tara into “Munchkin Land” near the other tamarins and marmosets, their joy was obvious! They explored their new surroundings enjoying the feel of the grass on their feet and the sun in their faces. They were also interested in the other monkeys in nearby habitats and called to them. It was apparent that the other monkeys were very interested in the new arrivals. Einstein is Tara’s best friend and protector. They are very playful and snuggle up together in their bedding to sleep.
