Monkers
Monkers was four years old when she was rescued from a bankrupt roadside zoo, along with her younger sister Zumie, and a nursing mother and infant. The monkeys were anesthetized for transport and when they arrived at the sanctuary we were told the nursing mother woke and she rejected her baby during the long drive from Texas to Florida. After watching the documentary, Wild Animal Repo, we feel that mother and son were separated during the capture and the baby was put in a kennel with the wrong female. The infant was only a few months old and was nearly dead at the end of the thousand-mile trip to Jungle Friends. Sanctuary staff stepped in to bottle feed and care for his physical needs...and to our delight Monkers stepped up to provide monkey nurturing to the baby, who we named Mochi. She had appointed herself as Mochi’s foster mom, Monkers carried the baby on her back until he was nearly her size, grooming and playing with him.
