TYLER

Tyler became the latest addition to the Jungle Friends family. Tyler is a 5-year old tufted capuchin hailing from New York. His story is typical of many "pet" monkeys...as soon as he reached sexual maturity at age 5, he became the "wild creature that he is" and became aggressive. The last attack ended with Russ needing stitches and Tyler being maced by the police. In addition, Tyler had been diagnosed with diabetes by his veterinarian in New York.

His "owner", Russ, not knowing what else to do, contacted Jungle Friends and did what was best for Tyler-to put him in an environment where he could be a monkey with other monkeys. Russ knew that we care for two diabetic monkeys and were able to give them a happy life despite the fact that they need insulin injections twice a day. Russ was confident that Tyler could receive proper care for his special needs here. Since Tyler had always been kept indoors, we fixed his quarantine area with an air conditioner, so that he could acclimate to the outdoors. Immediately upon his arrival, Tyler showed great excitement and curiosity about his new surroundings. Many of the "pet" monkeys that we take in are couch potatoes...but Tyler was the first to be addicted to soap operas! Thankfully, he weaned off of television rather quickly! Tyler was put on a special diabetic diet as soon he arrived at Jungle Friends, and his body seems to be responding positively to the change in diet and to the fact that he plays and exercises so much in his large habitat. In fact, last month his blood glucose level tested normal. Tyler will most likely not need insulin injections for his diabetes! Yeah!!! Tyler’s "owners", Russ and Ilene, have become wonderful Jungle Friends supporters and visit Tyler every few months to stay a part of his life.
