JUNGLE VOICES
Friends and volunteers of Jungle Friends speak out

Amanda, Volunteer

You don't have to be an ardent animal lover to enjoy volunteering at Jungle Friends. What is most important is respect to all living creatures, and their rights to freedom and undisturbed habitat; rights that are so often thoughtlessly revoked by people who feel their needs are superior. (Ofcourse, it is also important not to mind getting up early, getting dirty and shoveling monkey poop).

A volunteer who frequented the bookstore where I work introduced me to Jungle Friends. My boyfriend, an animal lover, immediately became a regular volunteer there. Soon he began spending most of his spare time at Jungle Friends and I had to start going along just to spend time with him. However, soon I started to look forward to going. The place really grows on you- the screeches and hoots the monkeys make when they see someone arriving, the excitement and affection of your favorites when you give them a good arm scratch, even the ones who persistently plot to pull your hair grow on you.

The atmosphere and attitude of the people make a tremendous contribution to Jungle friends as well. Kari, the founder, feeds the monkeys better than she feeds herself, fresh fruits, vegetables, hot cereal, monkey biscuits, and forage every day. The volunteers sacrifice a few extra hours of sleep, to begin their day by scrubbing and raking cages, never with any complaints. For everyone at Jungle Friends, the monkeys are always first. It's inspiring to see so many people with the most sincere and unselfish concern for these monkeys. If more people cared half as much as the people at Jungle Friends, maybe more animals would get the rights to freedom and habitat protection they deserve.

Lots of Monkey Love,
Kari and the Monks
