Individual Volunteer Information

Volunteer Group Information

Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary is built on the hard work of our volunteers. If you belong to a group or organization that would like to volunteer some time and effort to help the monkeys, we would love to have you come out to volunteer. We can accomplish so much when we have groups come out for the day!

Here's what you need to know about organizing a volunteer group for Jungle Friends.

When?

Weekends are the best time for groups to come out, but volunteer days can also be arranged on weekdays. We ask that volunteers stay for 4 hours, which is usually from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Different hours may be possible, but please understand that we are always working around the monkey care schedule.

Who?

Volunteers should be 18 or older. In some cases, special arrangement may be made for younger volunteers if accompanied by a parent or guardian - please notify us in advance to assure that younger volunteers will be able to participate.

We can accommodate about a dozen volunteers at one time. If you have a larger group, you may want to arrange to come out on different days.

Organizing your Volunteer Day

Please choose one person to act as coordinator for your group volunteer day. The coordinator should contact us by emailing info@junglefriends.org to make arrangements. Let us know the date(s) you want to volunteer, the number of people, and a little about your group. Also let us know if your group has any special needs or physical limitations so we can plan appropriate group projects.

The coordinator should make sure that everyone in their group receives and understands the information below regarding work schedule, paperwork to be completed, and appropriate dress. Good communication is key to making your volunteer day a great experience for everyone.

If you want more information before you set up a volunteer day, we would be happy to come to one of your organization's meeting and make a presentation about Jungle Friends: what we're all about and what you can expect on your volunteer day.

Food?

If you are interesting in staying for lunch, please let us know. If funding is available through A Well-Fed World or VegFund, we may be able to offer your group a scrumptious vegan meal. Otherwise, you are welcome to bring a brown-bag or potluck meal for a picnic lunch at the sanctuary. Vegan food only, please - no meat or dairy items.

What to bring and what to wear

  • Everyone in the group should bring a completed Volunteer Application form. The form can be printed from our website: www.junglefriends.org/junglefriends/Volunteer_Packet.pdf
  • Wear closed shoes only, such as sneakers or boots. No flip-flops, sandals or other open shoes.
  • Wear comfortable clothing for outdoor work, and remember that sanctuary work can be hard on your clothes - dirt, stains, and tears can definitely happen, so dress accordingly.
  • Bring rain gear, jackets/sweatshirts or dress in layers, appropriate to the season.
  • If you wear a hat or sunglasses, be warned that the monkeys like them, too, and will do their best to steal them from you. Don't wear anything on your head if you're not okay with losing it to the monkeys.
  • Do not wear jewelry. Again, the monkeys will steal it if they can, and what they steal they get to keep, so don't tempt them!
  • Bring work gloves, if you have them.

Usual Volunteer Day Schedule

9:45 a.m: Arrive at Jungle Friends. It is important to arrive on time so we can get organized and everyone can be assigned to project teams.
10:00 a.m. -   2:00 p.m. Volunteers work on various projects with a Jungle Friends team leader.
2:00 p.m. Lunch break. Volunteers are welcome to bring their lunch and join us. Please bring only vegan food to the sanctuary: no meat or dairy products.
3:00 p.m. Sanctuary tour.
After the tour, volunteers who wish to are welcome to help with afternoon chores.

Thank you so much for your interest in Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary, we look forward to meeting and working with you!
