Jungle News: February 24, 2003

Thanks to Larry Coyne, one of our new onsite caregivers, our quarterly newsletter, "Monkey Business", will be going out this week. We have not had the time to write a newsletter in about 2 years, so we are very grateful to Larry for taking over this most important project. If you are not on the mailing list or you would like to write an article for the newsletter, contact Kari@junglefriends.org. "Monkey Business" is 12 pages of information with lots of wonderful photos of the monkeys. Thanks Larry!!

Nicole and I will be presenting the BTBW PowerPoint presentation to the LA Zoo this Thursday (February 27). We are getting a lot of interest in the project, however very little money! So if you know of anyone interested in conservation efforts, endangered species or would just like to see some captive monkeys given back their birthright, please let them know about this project. There is an extensive write up about the BTBW project in the newsletter. We would be happy to send one out to anyone interested.

"Monkey Business" will have detailed information about the upcoming TV shows featuring Jungle Friends. For those of you not yet on the mailing list, see below.

Animal Magnetism will air for our friends in Canada on April 8th at 5 pm, April 12th at 5:30 pm and April 13th at 1 pm on the W network.

Ron Hazelton's House Calls will air the week of April 21st. You can check the listings in your area or go to www.ronhazelton.com. Ron helped us complete the Spider monkeys' new habitat, Ron even tried out the perches, swings and bananas!

Animal Planet's Pet Psychic will also air in April. To find out the dates and times, please go to www.animalplanet.com. This episode will feature Jimmy the Jerk, Dodger and Mickey. They talk to Sonya about the Born to be Wild project and exactly how they feel about each other.

America's Funniest Home Videos: A funny thing happened to Russ and his mother Eileen while they were here from New York visiting Tyler...Allow me to elaborate...Russ and Eileen were saying their goodbyes to the monkeys while I videotaped. Eileen forgot to "duck" under one of the monkeys' overhead runways and our own little Bailey snatched her wig right off the top of her head! Eileen was such a good sport about this, she even suggested we send it in to America's Funniest Home Videos. Well we did, and you guessed it, they called us. We have signed the release forms and they believe it, too, will air in April. We will keep you posted on the air dates. Wish us luck in the grand prize of $100,000! And a very special thanks to Eileen!!

The Las Vegas I Team with George Knapp will be doing an interview with Jungle Friends this week about the Born to be Wild (BTBW) project so we hope our Las Vegas friends will watch.

The Compassion for Animals Action Symposium will be coming up again March 7th - 9th. We hope to see many of you there. We will have many of our monkey's new works of art displayed at the symposium at our booth and we will be showing the Born to be Wild presentation. I have attached the information you will need to attend.

Jungle Jam is also coming up on March 23rd. We hope that many of you will be in attendance. Please RSVP to Kari@junglefriends.org for the event so that we can plan accordingly. We will be sending out more information as we get closer to the event.

Matching Gift Programs:We have had several of our friends join the 'Matching Gift Program' at their place of business. Many corporations offer matching gifts to non-profit organizations chosen by their employees, so I encourage you to double your dollars with a 'Matching Gift Program'. Thank you Libby and Hillary for your donations through the matching gift programs at your places of business, we sure do appreciate it!

Planned Givingis also a great way to contribute to your charities. This is something that a lot of us don't want to think about; however, I hit 49 years old today (here's where I burst into song, "Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me...") and I think I will re-visit my will and make sure it is up-to-date and that my wishes are spelled out. I encourage you to do the same.

"In Loving Memory":We have also had several donations made in memory of a beloved pet that has passed. Larry is adding a new section in the newsletter called "In Loving Memory". Please include a photo of your dear pet that has gone beyond so that we can honor him or her in our next newsletter.

Sponsor-A-Monkey: Larry is also adding a Sponsor-A-Monkey (SAM) section in the newsletter. So we will have all of the sponsored monkeys' photos, short bios and their sponsors listed. Believe it or not, not all of our monkeys have been sponsored yet, so if you are looking for a great way to contribute to Jungle Friends the SAM program is wonderful. And you can start with as little as $10 a month for a sponsorship. To find out more, visit the S-A-M page.

Ebi was due to arrive to Jungle Friends late April, however, that has changed and he will be arriving on March 18th, yikes!! We are in dire need of the funds to build another habitat prior to his arrival and we are running out of time! The total cost of the habitat is $4000 and we have received $1500 so far, we are in desperate need of the remaining $2500 immediately to get the habitat ordered and in place before Ebi arrives. PLEASE, help us build a safe haven for Ebi. Put a check in the mail or go to the website to make a donation today!

Lots of monkey love,
Kari and the monks
