December 9, 2007 - The Hundredth Monkey has arrived!

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

The nine monkeys who narrowly escaped more laboratory research arrived at Jungle Friends safe and sound on November 21st thanks to our amazing donors who made this possible! The boys are all settling in very nicely and are making new friends. Jungle Friends now has exactly 100 monkey residents!

The four new squirrel monkeys - Joey, Earl, Michael and Ringo - are only four years old. They were originally purchased for laboratory research. We are thankful that the study was cancelled and these youngsters will never be subjected to any type of research!

Joey has a bounce in his step and loves to carry his toys around in his tail. You will never find Joey too far away from Earl; they even sit together arm in arm at mealtime, and they are just adorable. Michael and Ringo are the first to greet our carestaff in the morning with their exhilarated calls - you can hear their chatter throughout the sanctuary when a new and exciting food has been discovered!

The five marmosets - Marvin, Tuque, Gizmo, Arnold, and Ernie- range from 6 to 8 years old. They were originally purchased by a research laboratory for iron toxicity studies; however, the lab found that marmosets were not good models for this study. Another investigator then wanted to 'use' them in schizophrenia studies! These boys barely escaped that fate. Fortunately for them, they were allowed to leave the lab and begin a new life at Jungle Friends.

Gizmo is the most outgoing of the troop, while Ernie and Marvin are shy and cautious. Tuque is shy around humans, but interacts very well with his friends and is quite curious about his new surroundings.

The nine new arrivals are housed in temporary indoor accommodations at this point, and are not yet able to enjoy our Florida sunshine. But we are confident that, with your help, the funds for their new building will come in very soon. We will then be able to connect their indoor enclosures to their new habitats and introduce the boys to the wonderful world of outdoors!

The Hundredth Monkey campaign mailing went out a few days ago, and we are convinced that our compassionate donors will give the 'gift of charity' this holiday season to help us raise the remaining $6,000 needed to purchase the last building for our new monkey family members. The new boys are in need of sponsors, too, so if you think a Monkey Calendar is just not enough, please consider sponsoring one of our new boys in a friend's honor this holiday.

If you have not yet watched 'The Hundredth Monkey,' please take ten minutes now to watch the video, then forward the link to everyone you know, and add it to your blog or website.

Thank you again to everyone who made it possible for these monkeys to come to live at Jungle Friends rather than continuing a life in research. You have made a HUGE difference in the lives of these nine monkeys - we could not have done it without your generous support, compassion and commitment to help those who cannot help themselves!
