January 31, 2010 - Weather woes, grandma and events

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

Ebi and Mickey Ebi, an ex-pet weeper capuchin, arrived at Jungle Friends in March of 2003, after enacting an escape-and-recapture drama in Louisiana. Here he met Mickey, a white-faced capuchin, who had arrived a couple of years earlier. Oddly enough, Mickey was also from Louisiana. He had been found by the authorities secreted away in the woods in a small wire cage. Perhaps Ebi and Mickey knew each other down in the bayou - they gravitated to each other almost immediately! Occasionally they feel compelled to do a little bit of guy-type posturing and name calling, but the mutual play, wrestling and grooming that happens the rest of the time tell the real story. Visit our website to sponsor Ebi or Mickey. You'll also find Ebi and Mickey featured on our new 2010 Jungle Friends calendar.

I hope you all had a great holiday and a Happy New Year!

We have had a bit of a struggle, not only financially, but with this crazy weather! We have been freezing here in sunny Florida and have spent way too much time fixing broken pipes, not to mention getting up through the night doing heat checks every few hours. It has been so windy we have had trash blow in from neighboring properties... then to top it off, we have had torrential rain. We have had two vehicles stuck in the mud, and Katie and I both sank in the mud and toppled over, whew!! I am ready for summer already - give me 90 degree temps and 100% humidity any day!

Grandma is finally out of the hospital and back in rehab, so please send healing thoughts and loving energy to get her back home. We all miss her. It is difficult to start our mornings without grandma's 'Good Morning to You' song! And if you haven't heard grandma sing it, you can hear her sing after the tree decorating party. The video is also on my Facebook Page.

Our 'Volunteers to Vegans' events have been a huge success! Our last V2V event was with the University of Illinois at Chicago Alternative Breaks students who volunteered for 4 days! We had a great time and got a lot accomplished.

We have been working on our events page, so please be sure to check it out. Lots of good stuff going on! And if you are going to be in the area for Valentine's Day, we are having a 'Share Your Heart' event, all day and into the night, I hope you will join us. If you are not able to join us, just send money!

Ozzie, our three-legged dog (a.k.a. the best dog in the world!) is now getting hydrotherapy treatments for his hip and back troubles, resulting from the strain of walking with only one rear leg. Ozzie loves the warm water and especially the jets :-)! Be sure to visit our website to see the video of Ozzie and his dog friends that Larry put together. Ozzie experienced so much abuse before Claude rescued him and brought him to Jungle Friends. Please send healing thoughts for Ozzie, who is the best dog in the world and who has suffered so much.

Lots of monkey love,
Kari and the monks
