June 10, 2009 - New Monkeys & Events

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

Facebook Logo

It has been quite busy here at the sanctuary since my last Jungle News post. Yikes, it has been over two months - I will try to do better! Of course, those of you who are on Facebook know that I have found an easier way to communicate. We will continue to send our Jungle News email posts, but if you are my friend on Facebook, you will get current news about the monkeys all the time!

We have had so much going on, I hardly know where to start; well, how about with the arrival of two more marmosets?

Marlee is a common marmoset, although there is nothing common about this little girl! She arrived on April 5, 2009 when she was not quite a year old. In just a couple of days she was making sweet marmoset sounds to Chachi, wooing him away from his intended companion, Mela. Marlee and Chachi are now a model couple, never separated for more than a moment! And don't worry too much about Mela...she is very interested in Mojo. Our fingers are crossed for a love connection.

No sooner is one marmoset established then another comes along! Bessie (named after Bess Truman) arrived Friday afternoon - and what a sweetie! She is a nine-year-old black-tufted-ear marmoset. She settled in very well, and by day two she had mastered the runway system. She thoroughly enjoys the liberty of going inside or outside at her leisure.

Memorial Medical Fund

But wait, there's more...another pair on the way! This time it's two capuchins. I first learned about Miki Moo and Meko Monster over a year ago - both had attacked their "owners." Not only were they at risk due to the attacks, but one is a diabetic on insulin. This makes finding sanctuary placement very difficult. After extensive consultation with the monkeys' owner, exploring other avenues, and much consideration, we concluded that Jungle Friends was the best possible sanctuary home for these two monkeys, so we must find a way to accommodate them! Miki and Meko are due to arrive in a couple of weeks. With the price of Lantus insulin continuing to rise ($114 per bottle!) and the economy continuing to fail, we could sure use support for our Medical Fund!

We also have some very exciting events coming up! Once again, I will be presenting at the Animal Rights Conference in Los Angeles, July 16-20. We will also have an exhibitor's table this year! Thanks to our generous supporters, everything has been covered - from the air miles to get me there to the exhibit table for our Monkey Merchandise and Monkey Art! Thank you Michael, Karen and Claude!!

Speaking of Monkey Art - I'm happy to announce our most exciting Monkey Art Exhibit and Fundraiser yet! Where, you ask?...how about Las Vegas! Yes, I'm returning to my old stomping grounds! Audrey Roberts, monkey-lover and creator of ARTV Awards, is filming and promoting the fundraiser. ARTV handles some of the leading artists from all over the world! And, of course, Monkey Art is all the rage!

Events are planned for September 25th and 26th at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino. We will have beautifully painted masterpieces of the primate persuasion, monkey merchandise, raffles and silent auctions, as well as exciting entertainers in the Las Vegas tradition. Attend Friday's VIP (Very Important Primate) Press Party, including the "Monkey Shines" cocktail party, a delicious vegan dinner and the "Banana Split" after party - all for a $50 donation!
