George 2000 - 2015

  • Species: Common Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri scuireus)
  • Gender: Male
  • Birthday: October 5, 2000
  • Arrival: July 1, 2015
  • Deceased: August 25, 2015
  • Background: Research
  • Character: Gentle

George was a 'gentleman' monkey. He was always gentle and kind towards his monkey friends as well as his human caregivers. In his previous home, George lived with his longtime friend Bob and the two spent their days together eating favorite food treats such as grapes and green beans, playing, napping, and flirting with the female squirrel monkeys that lived in adjacent enclosures. George was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF) earlier this year. CHF is a naturally occurring heart condition that strikes squirrel monkeys and humans alike. It can be treated for a time with medications and because George gladly took his twice-daily heart meds, as long as they were wrapped in his favorite treat marshmallows!, we were able to extend his life in comfort and with a high quality. This was accomplished thanks to the outstanding Veterinary and Caregiving attention he received at his previous home and most recently at Jungle Friends. It is because of the dedicated care given to George by Jungle Friends staff that he was able to spend the summer of 2015 with his friend Bob exploring their new 'almost wild' home at Jungle Friends.

If you would like to make a donation to Jungle Friends in memory of George please consider donating to the medical fund.

Sincerely,

CL (George's human caretaker from his previous home)
